On 11 March 1878 Tomas Edison presented his new device to the French Academy. This device had great success later and commonly used during long time. But French academy called this device "charlatanism".

ah yes, the phonograph :)
Actually, Edison had been accused of charlatanism previously, and many times after this invention. This was mainly because he had a team that worked for him, and when him AND his team came up with an invention, Edison would claim it as his own invention.

Fun fact: The first words he spoke into the phonograph, and that it played back, were: "Mary had a little lamb."
